The Ghost Bride Season 1, a collaboration between Taiwanese and Malaysian cinema, offers a variety of surprises but fails to leave a lasting impression after its release on Netflix in early 2020. As a result, this series has not been highly regarded by audiences and experts. Adapted from the novel "The Ghost Bride" by Yangsze Choo, directed by Malaysian filmmaker Quek Shio Chuan, and featuring a talented cast including Peijia Huang, Ngô Khảng Nhân, Ludi Lin, Kuang Tian, and Janet Hsieh, The Ghost Bride Season 1 is set in 1890 in Malacca. It revolves around the life of a young Chinese woman named Lệ Lan, who, in order to repay her family's debt, reluctantly agrees to become a "ghost bride" for a deceased child in a wealthy family. However, her life takes a terrifying turn, and the remaining days become haunted. While trying to escape this earthly hell, she unwittingly becomes entangled in a murder case and a series of mysterious events in the otherworldly realm.
