Idol School (2017),a survival program, is more like a real school than its name suggests. Over the course of 11 weeks, students not only learn about singing and dancing but also the history of Kpop and everything related to becoming an idol in Korea, such as mental training and public appearances. Producer Shin Yuseon stated that they began recruiting students in April 2017. Only female students aged 11 and above, who are not trainees of any entertainment company, are allowed to participate. The producer also clarified that former trainees and even former singers have the opportunity to join. This has caused some controversy as some feel it goes against the concept of "training normal students," but regardless, contestants who have been trained in entertainment companies have been reduced. The audience will vote directly in each episode, and the students' scores will be determined entirely by that.
Super Junior member Kim Hee-chul will play the role of the homeroom teacher in the program, while veteran actor Lee Soon-jae will be the principal of the school. The participants will be taught by several teachers: Singer and SES member Bada will be the vocal teacher along with Jang Jin Young, a trainer from SM Entertainment. Dance will be taught by choreographer Park Jun-hee and singer Stephanie. Black Eyed Pilseung will be the music producer.
