The Sword Identity is set in a remote region of China during peacetime. According to the rules of the martial world, anyone who wants to establish their own martial arts sect must pass through the four renowned local sects. Two swordsmen, who are followers of a general, have created a unique sword technique and intend to pass it down to future generations. However, their sword style is unreasonably rejected. From there, a mysterious and intense battle between the nameless swordsman and the four major sects begins.

The Sword Identity is completely different from any recent "mainstream" martial arts films. The fight scenes are not entertaining or visually stunning, but rather dry and abrupt. Most of the opponents are defeated with just one strike. Masters fight each other not only with weapons and strength, but also through their ideologies. Sometimes, the martial arts moves are so simple that they appear surreal. In contrast to the action, the explanations of techniques, strategies, weapon usage, and the concept of the martial world bring a fresh and unique flavor.

The storytelling in The Sword Identity is not smooth. Director Xu Haofeng does not provide lengthy explanations, allowing the audience to discover things on their own during the viewing process.
